half way through expectations

I expect to learn techniques to teach reading. I know that we recently learned about phonetic and whole approach reading. My question is how do I approach actually teaching a child to read? Do I make a mix between the two? Is there a technique that is very successful for teaching? I have ideas as to how to integrate pop culture into my classroom, but I want to hear and gather more ideas on how to do this.
